Gonzalo Higuain has said he had to leave Real Madrid in the summer because he was spending long periods out of the team.

The 25-year-old Argentina forward signed for Napoli in July ending his association with Los Blancos after scoring more than 100 goals in La Liga for the Santiago Bernabeu side.

Speaking to La Sexta, Higuain revealed he felt frustrated in his final season in the Spanish capital because he was constantly being rotated in and out of the team with Karim Benzema, meaning he couldn’t hit proper form.

He stated: “I had some great moments at Real Madrid, but also moments of unhappiness. I suffered because I wasn’t always playing. Sometimes Benzema started and then I got the chance to prove my worth again.

“I will always be grateful to the Madrid fans, though. They showed me a lot of affection during my seven years at the club.”
