Four assists and three goals in nine appearances. Statistically that is Ozil’s contribution to his new team, Arsenal FC. However, he has done far more than that for Arsenal. The Gunners seem to be a reformed team, playing with new vigour and zeal which has taken them to the summit of the Premier League.

Almost every football fan would credit Ozil with this rejuvenation. Mesut Ozil is a world class player, arguably the greatest No 10 in the world. Unlike previous summer transfers such as Andre Santos and Park Chu Young, Ozil is a big buy and a proven talent and his capture has lifted the spirits around the Emirates. For 42 million, he has been worth every penny until now. Players like Ramsey and Giroud have stepped up their games to be on the same level as The Maestro.

Watching Ozil light up the Premier League is hard for Madridistas like me. Personally, I am delighted to see him succeed and become the focal point for an exciting team like Arsenal. An exceptional talent like him should be in the limelight and shouldn’t play second fiddle to anyone. But watching him also leads me to ask the question whether Madrid would be an even better team if he was still around.

Real Madrid are a team in transition right now. New coach. New formation(s). New players.  The summer saw a massive overhaul of personnel with Isco, Bale etc coming in and Callejon, Higuain, Ozil etc leaving. Hence, it might be a little too early to come to conclusions.

One of the positions in the team which has seen a lot of change under Ancelotti is the No 10 position: The Creative Central Attacking Midfielder. Initially Isco took up the mantle but has since seen his role being occupied by Di Maria, Ronaldo, Modric and Bale with the position even being discarded altogether for the El Clasico. Let’s assess each of these players as a No 10.

Firstly Modric. While at Spurs, Modric was frequently played in the hole but since coming to Madrid, he has evolved into a deep playing playmaker: A more flamboyant version of Xavi (not as good as him though) mixed with a few Alonso traits. Madrid’s standard 4-2-3-1 formation doesn’t have a tailor-made position for Modric and hence he is often played in the double pivot alongside a more defensive midfielder. Playing Modric in the No 10 would be a waste in my opinion. His range of passing is outstanding and will not be fully utilized in that position. At the same time he also sometimes lacks that killer pass that the likes of Ozil, Silva and Mata can produce. Hence, he should only play as a No 10 if we are lacking a first choice No 10.

Next Di Maria. Di Maria has always been a winger. He has exceptional pace and his crosses can be devastating. He often cuts in to take a shot or curl in a cross. These are the main attributes of his game that have made him so important to Madrid over the last 3 seasons.  If he used as a No 10, he will be unable to utilize these attributes of his game. Di Maria unfortunately can be quite wasteful and inaccurate with his passes/crosses. As a winger, these errors can be excused and overlooked but as a No 10 when the final ball has to be perfect, he might come up short.

Bale and Ronaldo can be considered together because they have similar traits. The last two games against Rayo and Sevilla have been an attacking spectacle. It has been a delight to watch Bale and Ronaldo at full throttle. ‘Dos Torpedos’ as the Spanish Media refers to them, are essentially free roaming wingers although Bale’s role will be more restrictive compared to Ronaldo. Bale has played as a No 10 for Spurs and while he was very good in that position, it is clear that he has made a name for himself on the wing. Madrid did not pay 100 million for Bale to be played out of position.

Ronaldo is a player Madrid has to deal with carefully. It is senseless to play him out of position and unnecessarily upset him. Looking past his personal sadness, playing him as a No 10 also lowers the quality of the team play for the same reason as Bale.

That essentially leaves only Isco. Isco is the only true No 10 Real has.Touted as the future of La Roja, Isco is an unbelievable talent. Ancelotti saw this and hence pushed Ozil out to the right wing in the first few matches. Isco needs to be our permanent No 10.  He can provide exceptional service to Bale, Ronaldo and Benzema and thereby form one of the most devastating attacks in Europe. Comparisons will be made between Ozil and Isco. Is he on the same level of Ozil yet? No. but he has the potential to be even better than Ozil. Isco is still raw and it is amazing how he has fitted in without being overwhelmed by the Bernabeu despite having only one amazing season prior to his arrival.

He is more dynamic that Ozil. He has more strength and hence doesn’t get outmuscled off the ball easily. Also he scores gaols on a more regular basis than Ozil. His overall play isn’t yet on the same level of Ozils but surely he will rise to that level if given regular playing time and patience.

Madrid’s style of play changes as well with Isco instead of Ozil. Ozil was more suited for Mourinho’s counterattacking game while Isco is more suited to Ancelotti’s possession game because he is better at holding up the ball and keeping it.

So is Madrid better or worse without Ozil ? This is a divisive question. In my opinion, Ozil providing service for ‘Dos Torpedos’ would have been a mouthwatering prospect but Isco doing the same is equally exciting. Time will answer this question.

Real Madrid’s new arrivals

Time to make an early assessment about our new players.

Illaramendi: Touted as the next Alonso, Illaramendi has fitted in well. He has been efficient and effective but unspectular. The injury to Alonso gave him lots of playing time, something which is very useful for a young player trying to adjust to the tough environment of Real Madrid.  He has a good range of passing and is an effective shield for the back 4. Alonso’s return will see Illara drop to the bench but in all probability, he will still enjoy a good amount of playing time considering Alonso’s fitness and age. A good investment and one for the future.

Carvajal: Rated as the Bundesliga’s best right back by German newspaper Bild, the former youth player returned home via a buyback clause. Carvajal has had a shaky start to life in the Bernebeu. Neither him nor Arbeloa have had extended spells in the right back position and I expect that this tussle will go on for the rest of the season. He definitely is more talented than Arbeloa and can go on to become world class. He just needs to calm down and gain some composure. Another wise investment.

Bale: To be honest, I was completely against the move for Bale. His arrival meant the exit of Ozil, my favourite player at Madrid and excessive splurging of a 100 million. Without a preseason and a small injury, Bale started off on a bad note. The Clasico came too early for him and he was played in a position and formation quite alien to him. Three assists and two goals in the last two games have shown us the real Bale. Watch out Europe.

Many Madridistas are extremely fickle. They are too quick to criticize the team and the coach. We need to give Ancelotti and the players more time and be patient. Hala Madrid.

Fabio Coentrao will miss Real Madrid’s Champions League group game against Juventus tomorrow night with an ankle injury, it has been confirmed.

The Portugal left-back sustained the injury in Los Blancos’ 3-2 win over Rayo Vallecano at the weekend and was taken off before towards the end of the first half.

A statement on the club’s official website said Coentrao underwent more thorough tests on Sunday that revealed the 25-year-old suffered a sprained ankle and could be out of action for a while. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has a ready made replacement in the form of Brazil left-back Marcelo.

“After tests carried out on Fabio Coentrao at the Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital, it has been confirmed that he has a sprained left ankle, which will continue to be monitored,” the statement read.

Los Blancos sit top of Group B with the maximum nine points after three games. They defeated Italian champions Juventus 2-1 at the Bernabeu two weeks ago. A win in Turin tomorrow would ensure qualification for the last 16.

Madrid sports daily As puts its focus today on Cristiano Ronaldo’s great state of form. “The best Ronaldo ever,” they title, pointing out that he has scored an unprecedented 20 goals in 15 matches.

As highlights that Real Madrid’s star could soon become the club’s top scorer if he maintains those statistics. “He could overtake Raul in only 14 months,” they publish.

The other main Spanish sports paper, Marca, emphasizes in its front page a few details about tomorrow’s Champions League match against Juventus.

“Howard Webb will be the referee,” Marca points out. “Xabi Alonso, Raphael Varane and Iker Casillas will be in the starting line-up,” they claim.

Marca’s main headline is “Madrid has two thunders,” in a reference to Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, who have scored “seven of the team’s last ten goals.”

Diego Lopez admitted his team mates “are all responsible” following a second half scare in Real Madrid’s 3-2 win over Rayo Vallecano.

A Cristiano Ronaldo double and Karim Benzema header saw Madrid ease into a comfortable lead over their city rivals but then conceded two early second half penalties, both calmly converted by Jonathan Viera.

A frantic second half ultimately saw the Los Blancos hold on to all three points, but Lopez admitted that the game should serve as a wake-up call for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

The goalkeeper, who turned 32 today, told his club’s official website: “We pressed very high but couldn’t put anything together, they played with a lot of intensity and made us suffer.

“This team [Vallecano] is going to get out of the trouble they’re in because they play good football and deserve to be much higher up the table.

“In regards to how we play, our concentration and attitude, we are all responsible. The team makes a big effort to score goals – we have showed that we can create danger against all teams – but we also have to defend. It is the responsibility of all 11 players.”

Madrid now travel to Turin on Tuesday night as they take on Italian champions Juventus in the Champions League.

Carlo Ancelotti bemoaned his team’s inability to concentrate after Real Madrid secured a hard fought victory away at Rayo Vallecano on Saturday evening.

Los Blancos had taken a 0-3 lead just after half-time but then conceded two goals in three minutes, as they did against Sevilla on Wednesday, to allow Rayo a path back into the match before eventually holding out for the win.

Ancelotti said: “Against Sevilla it could have been a coincidence, but today is the second time and it is not. We have to change the attitude that we have on the field sometimes because a team of this quality cannot let our opposition back into a match that we’re winning 3-0.”

The Italian told the press: “It is something that we have to talk about in the dressing room. It has happened twice that being in front has changed the attitude out on the field and that is not good. We shouldn’t think that the match is over if we’re winning 3-0. I’m sure that it will not happen again.

“Rayo Vallecano put us in trouble because they pressed well. We did not suffer in the first half, but we did in the second half. In the first half we scored two fantastic goals and had control but the second half was a disaster,” he concluded.

Real Madrid might be interested in purchasing Liverpool’s Luis Suarez during the January transfer window, presumes former Los Blancos president Ramon Calderon.

However, since Liverpool during the summer has had a rough transfer struggle with Arsenal over Suarez, the Reds could continue to grab hold of him.

According to Calderon, when the Liverpool star disclosed that he wanted to leave to play Champions League Football, Real Madrid and Suarez were profoundly linked and the Spanish club could begin to think about the negotiating process to sign Suarez.

Calderon conceives that Real Madrid’s enticement manifests itself as being too excessive according to TalkSports.

“Anyone dreams of playing for Real Madrid. I’m sure Suarez would like to come,” said Calderon.

“I saw the other day he scored three goals and he’s playing very well. He’s a fantastic player. Everyone would want to have him in their team,” he added.

Calderon said he does not know if Liverpool is going to sell the Uruguayan striker and if Real Madrid has enough money to pay for him in January. He believes he could play in the Champions League since he is not playing the tournament with his club. He deems it “a good chance if Real Madrid thinks they need something like him because Benzema is not playing well and they don’t have a proper striker nowadays so maybe [now is the time].”

“There were some talks a few months ago before the summer and I don’t know what happened” he said, “maybe because of signing Bale it meant it was impossible to sign Suarez, we needed to perhaps sell another player.”

Suarez has become an outstanding player in the Premier League, scoring six goals in four games against Sunderland, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and West Bromich Albion. He scored his fourth Premier League hat-trick last weekend.

Real Madrid Press report 3-11-13

Madrid-based sports newspapers put their focus today on yesterday’s Real Madrid scare at Rayo Vallecano’s, where they were close to dropping points against the bottom team of La Liga after getting a 0-3 lead.

“Miracle in Vallecas,” titles As, claiming “Ronaldo and Benzema goals saved a Real dominated by Rayo.”

Marca’s main headline emphasizes the fact that Los Blancos have a great forward line, but a poor defence. “Big team up front, small team on the back,” they title.

Spain’s most sold paper highlights that Los Merengues won thanks to the likes of Ronaldo, Benzema and Gareth Bale, since Rayo “gave them a lesson of courage and good football.”

The Madrid daily also bring to their front page Carlo Ancelotti’s words after the game: “The second half has been a total defensive disaster,” he told the press.

Monaco’s vice-president Vadim Vasilyev has hit out at media reports about  a possible transfer of Colombian hit-man Radamel Falcao to Real, saying such a move would make “no sense”.

The Russian, in an interview with Madrid-based sports daily Marca, rubbished reports of the former Atletico star moving to Real, just six months after his reported 60 million euros ($86.84 million) move to the newly promoted Ligue 1 club.

In reply to Real president Florentino Perez’s claims in October that Falcao “was keen to come to Madrid”, Vasilyev said “Falcao signed a five-year contract and, if I have to say it a hundred times I will, there is no clause allowing him to leave.”

“We made a big effort to bring him here and it makes no sense for him to leave, either in the winter, the summer or whenever,” said the principality’s team vice president, who also criticised the interview with Perez, saying it was “inappropriate” for a director of another club to talk about a player who was under contract at Monaco.

Vasilyev’s claims are further backed up by Falcao himself, who ruled out a move to Real in January in a separate interview with Marca at the start of October.

Real Madrid earned a dramatic victory against Rayo Vallecano, the bottom team of La Liga. The hosts were close to making a miraculous come-back from a 0-3 after Jonathan Viera scored two penalties. However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace and Karim Benzema’s goal gave Carlo Ancelotti’s side three points despite Real didn’t show their best game.

Ronaldo put Los Blancos ahead early in the third minute after slipping the ball through Galvez’s legs and curling it across Ruben into the back of the net.

As usual, Rayo tried to keep the possession, and Real’s relaxation after the goal allowed them to take control of the game. However, Los Merengues’ defence performed at a great level during the first half and the hosts didn’t have any serious chances to equalise.

Their best effort was a cross from Lass Diarra that Iago Falque sent to the back of the net with a volley. However, the goal was disallowed by the referee as the ball rejected of Jonathan Viera, who was in offside position.

Ancelotti’s men counter-attacks were very dangerous and it didn’t take long until Karim Benzema made it 0-2. Xabi Alonso recovered the ball in midfield and passed it to Gareth Bale. Rayo’s defenders couldn’t stop the fast Welshman, who send a perfect cross with his right foot and Benzema easily scored with a header.

The game seemed lost for Rayo when Ronaldo made it 0-3 at the start of the second half, scoring his 13th goal in La Liga this season. The Portuguese combined with Bale and smashed the ball into the net from close range.

However, two penalties in two minutes made the Vallecas side believe in a miracle. Pepe hauled Viera down and the Canarian shortened the difference. Viera himself made it 2-3 after Marcelo was penalised for foolishly crashing into the back of Falque.

With Rayo playing with a three-man defence, Paco Jemez’s side started playing brilliantly, causing Diego Lopez a lot of trouble. Alberto Bueno could have equalised with a powerful strike from 25 metres, but the ball was pushed onto the post by the fingertips of Real Madrid’s goalkeeper.

Adrian Embarba and Saul Niguez also missed two good chances but their shots went wide off the post. Ruben denied Ronaldo’s strike to seal the victory for Real in a counter-attack.

The host dominated the game completely in the second half, with Real showing a lack of personality and focusing only in defending. However, they were unable to complete the come-back scoring a third goal.

Madrid’s poor image in the second half and Fabio Coentrao’s injury were the negative part of a match that Los Blancos won to maintain the six-point difference with Barcelona.

Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid match preview

Real Madrid will go into this fixture on the back of a ten-goal thriller with Sevilla where Los Blancos scored seven to see off their opponents.

However Carlo Ancelotti’s men conceded three goals and will be looking to improve defensively against a very attacking Vallecano side.

Rayo are sitting in the relegation places with just nine points on the board and will certainly have some bite about them as they look to improve on their recent form.

Real are third in the table behind Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, but will be buoyed by the goal scoring exploits of Gareth Bale who now has three for his new club.

French striker Karim Benzema was also on the score sheet after a disappointing run that has seen him benched at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The visitors will be confident of a victory as their Madrid neighbours have not beaten them in the league since 1997.

Rayo striker Alberto Bueno is his side’s top scorer on two goals and will need to be in fine fettle if he wants to give the home crowd something to cheer about.

Rayo Vallecano: Ruben; Tito, Galvez, Niguez, Arbilla; Trashorras, Adrian; Lass, Falque, Viera; Bueno.

Real Madrid: Lopez, Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Coentrao; Alonso, Modric, Di Maria; Bale, Benzema, Ronaldo.
