Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid Preview

Both sides sit on 23 points after 11 games of the La Liga campaign so far and neither side can afford to lose any more ground on League leaders Barcelona at this early stage. Atletico Madrid secured a 1-0 win away from home against Deportivo La Coruna before the international break and will look to win again here. Filipe Luis is fully fit now, and Koke should be fine to start in midfield after working on his fitness.

Real Madrid got back to winning ways last time out with a 3-0 victory over Las Palmas. Keylor Navas is still injured and will miss out here. Gareth Bale is also out which is a blow for Los Blancos.

Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid Prediction

Atletico Madrid are unbeaten in La Liga so far this season, but a lot of these have been draws. Even though they possess firepower up front, they haven’t been firing on all cylinders yet. They are also winless in their last four matches at their new home, which includes La Liga and Champions League action.

Real Madrid had suffered consecutive defeats before the routine victory against Las Palmas. It is fair to say that the pressure is still very much on manager Zinedine Zidane at the moment. Many Real Madrid fans will be expecting a victory from Los Blancos against their city rivals.

Both Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo have been off colour this season but is CR7 ready to fire Los Blancos to victory in the Madrid Derby? Ronaldo was granted a leave of absence by Portugal during the international break, when he celebrated the birth of his fourth child. With everything going well there, he will be well-rested, worry-free and in high spirits heading into Saturday’s crucial clash at Wanda Metropolitano.

Both Real and Atletico have been underwhelming this season. They sit third and fourth in the La Liga standings respectively, tied on 23 points with Los Blancos ahead by virtue of their better goal difference. Barcelona already have an 8 point advantage at the top of the table and will be extremely difficult to reel in. This adds even more pressure in what is already one of the biggest matches of the season.

Tactical Shift Could Benefit Ronaldo

Atletico Madrid’s strength is in their well-organised defence. Diego Simeone’s side rarely give anything away and have the second best defensive record in La Liga going into Saturday’s showdown. This suggests that Real Madrid will have to work extremely hard to break them down, while also being prepared to deal with any counter attacks.

So far this season, Zinedine Zidane has predominantly gone with a 4-4-2 diamond formation, using Isco in the hole. This has seen Ronaldo used in a more central forward role, which gives him less room to maneuver than when played out wide. However, with Isco being an injury doubt, there is a school of thought that suggests Zidane could roll out a 4-3-3. This would potentially afford Ronaldo more room to operate on the left of an attacking three and could result in an improved performance.

There is no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo is a big game player. He regularly rises to the occasion and has scored in three separate Champions League finals. A good omen ahead of Saturday’s match is that he scored two hat-tricks against Atletico Madrid last season. Real Madrid fans will be hoping for more of the same from the main man on this occasion.

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has claimed that Spurs re-signing Gareth Bale could win the club it’s first ever Premier League title. Redknapp was voicing his opinion as a guest on the popular TalkSport breakfast show, hosted by Alan Brazil. The claims have sparked rumours that the Welshman could be set for a sensational return to Tottenham.

The Lilywhites last won England’s top division in 1961 but have only recently began to mount a serious challenge in the Premier League era. They have been in the running for the title in each of the last two seasons and only just fell short of glory on both occasions. Bale could be the elite player needed to get them over the line. However, a major stumbling block in any potential transfer is the well documented salary cap that Tottenham have in place.

“He could win the title for you. Keeping him fit is the problem, but if he’s fit and playing he can be the difference between finishing third, fourth or fifth and winning it.”

Bale joined Real Madrid in a then world-record £85 million deal back in 2013. The powerful winger has won three Champions League titles and also has a La Liga medal since making the switch. Unfortunately, injuries have limited his game time of late, with Bale only taking part in 20 of Real’s last 60 matches. His ongoing fitness troubles have caused speculation about his future and Redknapp’s latest sound bytes will only serve to add fuel to the fire.

The clubs have already met twice in this season’s Champions League. The tie at the Bernabeu ended 1-1, with Cristiano Ronaldo salvaging a point for Real Madrid after a Raphael Varane own goal had given Tottenham Hotspur the lead. The return fixture at Wembley was a night to forget for Los Blancos, who turned in an uncharacteristically flat performance to allow Spurs a comfortable 3-1 victory.

Zinedine Zidane received The Best Award from FIFA few weeks ago as the best coach of 2017. Obviously, the prized was well deserved after winning the Champions League, La Liga, the Spanish Supercup and the European Supercup the very same year. Besides, he is the only coach able to win back to back titles of the Champions League.

Now we want to make memory and think about the best Real Madrid coaches in the history of the club. Here are some names:

Miguel Muñoz

He is the coach with more games training Real Madrid. He was in the club from 1959 to 1974, directing 604 games, 357 of them were victories. Besides, he was also a player in the club. Miguel Muñoz, who passed away in 1990, won 14 titles, between them 9 La Liga trophies and two Champions League (1960 and 1966).

Vicente del Bosque

He was also a former player of the club and he had his first opportunity as a coach in 1994. However, it was in 1999 when he took over John Benjamin Toshack role. Del Bosque won two Champions League trophies (2000 and 2002) among his 7 trophies. He trained 245 games, 133 of them were victories. He left the club in 2003, after winning La Liga. After a brief stage at Besiktas, he joined the Spanish national team, winning the World Cup and the Euro 2014.

Leo Beenhakker

He is the foreign coach with more games at Real Madrid, a total of 197. This Dutch coach started working for Real Madrid in 1986 until 1992 in two different stages. The first one was the most successful one with 3 La Liga titles, being the first foreign coach able to win three straight titles in La Liga. However, he couldn’t win any European title for Los Blancos.

Luis Molowny

He was the person who said: “90 minutes at Bernabéu are too long”. It was the time where Los Blancos were able to come back after shocking defeats in Europe. Molowny worked from 1974 to 1986 in three different stages, directing 180 games. He won 8 titles, among them 3 La Liga trophies and 2 UEFA Cups.

José Mourinho

The controversial manager worked for Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013 and he was able to win three titles, including La Liga. He arrived at a very bad moment of the history and he was able to bring the team to the semi-finals of the Champions League three years in a row. However, he was unable to win an European tournament and he had to leave in 2013 after a bad season.

Nowadays it’s very difficult to think about one club men in football. In the recent history, we’ve seen Francesco Totti’s farewell with AS Roma or Jamie Carragher one with Liverpool. We have to go back many years to see one club men at Real Madrid. Some recent stars like Raúl González or Iker Casillas had to leave the club at the end of their careers to play for Schalke 04 or Porto FC.

However, if we go back we can find some examples in Real Madrid history. Actually there are only three, perhaps four, situations of this type. Have a look at this famous one club men at Real Madrid.

Santiago Bernabéu

He is the myth of Real Madrid. The history of the club cannot be understood without him. He played for Los Blancos from 1911 to 1926 a total of 16 seasons with 78 league appearances. Later on, he became on of the most important presidents of the club, transforming the club and render it one of the most successful institutions of the world. The stadium was named after him.

Chendo

Miguel Porlan Chendo is still working for Real Madrid as he’s been one of the most important footballers of the club. He played as a right back from 1982 to 1998 with 363 league appearances. Although he didn’t have a great quality, his competitive skills and his love for the t-shirt made him essential in the club.

Manuel Sanchís

He has recently lost his father, Manuel Sanchís, also Real Madrid player and champion of Europe in 1966. His son, Manolo Sanchís, played with Los Blancos from 1983 to 2001 and he won twice the Champions League. Actually, he was a key player in the team able to win back the Champions in Amsterdam in 1998. He was stopper or full back and he had 533 appearances with the club.

José Antonio Camacho

Although he might not be considered as one club men, we want to include him in this list. Camacho played one season in his early days (1972-73) for Albacete. Soon after, he moved to Madrid to play for Castilla (1973-74) and then for Real Madrid (1974-1989) with 414. He is a very charismatic Real Madrid supporter and he defended the t-shirt with proud from his role of left back. He also was the coach of the team twice, in 1998 and 2004.

We want to look back today and introduce you to one of the best teams Real Madrid have ever had. In the 60’, we can remember the ‘Yé-Yé Team’, able to win the European Cup in 1965-66 and the greatest team in Spain in Europe in this decade. The nickname came for the Beatles song ‘She loves you’ and because four of the members of this squad appeared in the front page of ‘Marca’ with wigs emulating The Beatles, obviously the best known band at that time.

This team was formed exclusively for Spanish players. They were able to continue with the success started with Alfredo Di Stéfano or Ferenc Puskas, who won five European Cups in a row. Francisco Gento was the only survivor and he took also part in the ‘Yé-Yé Team’.

After playing for Real Madrid, Miguel Muñoz became the coach of this great team. Actually, he is still the best coach in the history of the club, thanks to this great generation. Talking about the players we should highlight Pachín, Pedro de Felipe, Zoco, Velázquez or Amancio Amaro, whose nickname was ‘El Brujo’ (‘The Witch’), because of his dribblings. Manuel Sanchís, who has recently passed away, took also part of this team.

During this time, they were the best team in Spain, winning La Liga title nine times, five of these titles came in a row. However, they will also be remembered for winning the Champions League in 1966 at Heysel. The team arrived after losing two finals but they were favourites against Partizan. Only Benfica and Inter Milan had the similar quality.

The Yugoslavian team took the lead in the minute 55. However, Amancio Amaro and Francisco Serena scored to give the club their 6th European Cup in 1966. The club had to wait 32 years to see another Champions League Cup in their museum, in 1998 at Amsterdam Arena.

The footballers who played that final were: (3-5-2) José Araquistáin, Pachín, Zoco, Manuel Sanchís, Pirri, Manuel Velázquez, Fernando Serena, Amancio Amaro, Ramón Grosso and Paco Gento.

The goalkeeper role is always a tricky one in a club, specially in a huge team like Real Madrid. However, throughout the history of the club we have seen many great players defending the white goal. Now we want to show you some of them, especially in these days with Kiko Casilla and Keylor Navas are criticized for their low performance.

These are some of the best goalkeepers in Real Madrid history. Do you miss any?

Juan Alonso

Perhaps he’s the less known for the great public. He was the goalkeeper in the three first European Cups won for the Di Stéfano team. Juanito Alonso started playing for Los Blancos in 1949. He lost his place in the starting eleven in 1959 affected for a lung problem. He left the club in 1961 with five La Liga titles and five European Cups, three of them as the goalkeeper.

Miguel Ángel

In 1967, Miguel Ángel González arrived to Madrid, but he had fierce competitors with Betancort or García Remón, so he struggled to earn a spot in the team. After a loan at Castellón, Miguel Ángel was the first choice from 1974 and during a decade.

García Remón GI

Mariano García Remón

Known as the ‘Gato de Odesa’ (Odesa’s cat), he played for Real Madrid between 1971 and 1986. This nickname came after a game played against Dynamo Kiev at Odesa in the Champions League, where García Remón made a great performance. He was born in Madrid and he’s considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the club’s history. He won 7 La Liga titles and 2 UEFA Cups.

Agustín Rodríguez

Mariano García Remón got injured in 1981 and he was substituted by a young player called Agustín Rodríguez, who was a star in Real Madrid second team Castilla. Actually, they were runner-ups of the Copa del Rey in 1980. Agustín stayed in the club until 1990 when he moved to Tenerife. He won 5 La Liga titles and 2 UEFA Cups.

PacoBuyo-GI

Paco Buyo

Some of the latest years, Agustín was on the bench because Paco Buyo showed up with great skills. He also came from Galicia (NorthWest of Spain) and he won a spot in the line-up quite quickly. He played for Los Blancos from 1986 to 1997, when he retired. He was bought from Sevilla. Although he’s been one of the greatest goalkeepers and he played together with La Quinta del Buitre, he was unable to have international success. He won 7 La Liga titles.

Iker Casillas

Perhaps, the best goalkeeper of the history of the club and the more charismatic one. He was born in Madrid and made his debut in 1999 at San Mamés, Bilbao. From that year, he became the goalkeeper of the team, winning two Champions League in 2000 and 2002. However, in the last one, he started the game on the bench because César Sánchez was the chosen one by Del Bosque. César got injured and Casillas saved the team. He was the owner of the goal until Mourinho’s arrival, who put him on the bench. With Carlo Ancelotti as a manager, he played only the Champions League and the Copa del Rey, winning both trophies in 2014. In 2015 and after a difficult season, he joined Porto. He played 725 games with the club -the second with more games in the history-, winning 5 La Liga trophies and 3 Champions League among other trophies. He also won two Euro Cups and the World Cup in 2010 with Spain.

Zinedine Zidane hesitated on whether including Casemiro in the line-up against UD Las Palmas or not. Finally, the Brazilian midfielder was included although he risked missing the derby against Atlético Madrid for suspension as he has four yellow cards. The stopper opened the scoreboard and was substituted when Los Blancos killed the game. Zidane wanted to save his key player.

These actions happened because Casemiro is perhaps the most important player in the squad. He doesn’t have a replacement in the team, although Los Blancos brought Marcos Llorente back to Madrid after the loan at Alavés. Casemiro is still the best stopper and his importance is growing game after game this season.

We can see how Los Blancos are lost when Zidane changes the formation and play with three defenders. Casemiro loses his place in the midfield and he has to play as a defender, where he’s not that valuable, leaving a big gap in the midfield. Against Tottenham Hotspur this happened and Delle Ali knew how to punish it.

Casemiro is not only important in the defensive part, but he’s also scoring some key goals. Against UD Las Palmas, he found the net, but he also scored a superb goal in the Champions League final against Juventus or against Napoli at home in the Last 16 round. Overall, he’s scored 9 goals in this 2017, a great number if we take in consideration that he’s a specialist in the defensive part.

Luckily, Zidane can count on Casemiro for the derby. When the French took over, Casemiro was always on the bench because Zizou wanted a very offensive team. However, he realized soon that the team needs an anchor, a stopper to let Modric or Kroos play. And he was completely right. Now he is one of the best players of the world in his role and key in Zidane’s formation.

Jesús Vallejo made his La Liga debut last Sunday against UD Las Palmas. The defender played his first minutes with Los Blancos in the Copa del Rey game against Fuenlabrada but he was sent off. Only few days later, Zidane trusted him and included him in the line-up. The Spaniard hasn’t disappointed anybody.

Actually, his performance was brilliant. Jesús Vallejo was quick, fast, secure and he played without any risk. It was the perfect debut although UD Las Palmas tried to counter-attack several times. He finished the game very tired and with muscular problems, but the job was done and he showed great personality.

This personality is very important to have success at Bernabéu. We saw him cheering Cristiano Ronaldo up in the half-time after missing some chances. “It will go in, we’re nearly there. You’ll get one. Patience”, Vallejo said to Cristiano when he was frustrated in front of the goal.

Zidane also highlighted his good debut: “This is his second game in the line-up and he did great”, the manager said after the game.

Jesús Vallejo has a serious problem with the injuries because he’s been unable to show his great level due to the physical problems. Last season, he was on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt, becoming one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga in the first half of the season. However, an injury prevented him to play.

At the moment, he will have problems to start many games. Obviously, Sergio Ramos and Varane are the perfect couple as full-backs. Nacho stays as the first option to substitute them, especially now that Daniel Carvajal is back with the team and Nacho doesn’t have to play as right back. Achraf is not mature yet to occupy this position, so Vallejo could enjoy more minutes throughout the season.

Do you think Jesús Vallejo will succeed at Real Madrid?

Cristiano Ronaldo

Reports on Tuesday have suggested that Cristiano Ronaldo has rejected a new contract at Real Madrid and has decided that he wants to leave the club in the summer.

The Portuguese star already has a contract to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu until 2021, but there are now rumours suggesting he is unhappy at the club and has demanded a transfer. Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, who works for TV station El Chiringuito, says that Ronaldo has informed Real Madrid president Florentino Perez of his decision.

It should come as no surprise that the club are rumoured to have rejected this demand, which the reports suggest have only angered Ronaldo even more. The issue appears to be that Cristiano ‘doesn’t feel appreciated’ at Real and that he is not valued high enough. His relationship with the fans is still in tact, but he has fallen out with the club’s hierarchy.

Real Madrid To Lose Their Key Star?

Ronaldo signed a new contract only last year and has reportedly rejected the offer of a renewed contract recently.

When he was asked earlier this month whether he was expecting to sign a new deal with Madrid, Ronaldo told beIN Sports:

‘I don’t want to renew. I don’t want to renew.

‘I’m very happy with the contract I have.’

It has not been the easiest start to the season, and by his own high standards Cristiano has not performed at his usual level. It has been a busy few weeks for the superstar too, as he recently became a father again with the birth of a baby girl.

After the international break is over, Los Blancos face one of the biggest games of the season away at city rivals Atletico Madrid. Though Ronaldo has cut a frustrated figure recently, Real Madrid fans will hope he can find form yet again in this crucial match.

Having scored only once in La Liga so far this season, Cristiano will be desperate to get on the scoresheet again. Whether the rumours of him wanting out are true or not remain to be seen but one thing is for sure, while he is still in a Real shirt Ronaldo will continue to give 100%.
